An Unusual Valentine’s Day at the Delaware Beaches

Heart Hands

Don’t Get Stuck in the Cliché Valentine Rut – Delaware Beaches Offers Some Exciting Options

Valentine’s Day is a chance to show the one we love that we care. Roses are sold by the thousands. Teddy bears, chocolates and jewelry abound. And people take their sweetheart to a local chain restaurant. But why get stuck doing the same dull thing you did last year?

This Valentine’s Day presents an exciting opportunity. President’s Day, a federal holiday that many people get off work for, fall the day after Valentine’s Day. Three-day weekend anyone??? Don’t do the same old same old. Take your special one on an adventure. Head to the Delaware Beaches!

Here is your guide on how to create a unique weekend your Valentine won’t forget!

Novel Places to stay…

Bed and Breakfasts are making a comeback! What was once considered your grandparent’s accommodations has become an original way to spend a night out. The Addy Sea takes you back to the Victorian era, with its historical décor and old time charm. Many rooms offer a two-person Jacuzzi, a romantic amenity for your Valentine’s weekend.

Want to try something even more adventurous. Head to Delaware State Park! Rent a lovely seaside cottage, and sit in the shore-side home watching the sunset hand-in-hand with the one you love. Or if you don’t mind braving the elements, reserve a campsite. Bundled warmly in a cozy tent, you can nestle close together through the night.

Not Your Usual Valentine’s Day Activities…

Carriage rides and concerts are all well and good, but they who fish together stay together. Get warm and snuggly in your coats and jump on a boat! At Rehoboth Star Fishing Charters, you are always given first class treatment. And even in winter, the fish are biting!

A little competition is healthy in any relationship. Gear up and go to OC Paintball and Sports Center! Open every weekend, this may be a good way for you and your boo to solve any disagreements you’ve been having.

Want to pretend you’re Bonnie and Clyde, or maybe a gunslinger and his saloon girl? Make an appoint at Past Reflections. You can dress up as a famous historical couple or just choose something that hits your fancy. Whatever you choose, it will be a memory you treasure forever.

Adventurous Fare for Your Romantic Night Out…

Valentine’s Day is not the time to visit your go-to chain restaurant, or (gasp) fast food! Treat yourself and your honey to a night on the town. Delaware Beaches offers some interesting restaurants that will excite your palate.

Seafood is a staple in this region. But there are two restaurants who shine in this area. Harpoon Hanna’s offers scenic waterfront views or cozy fireside corners. Sample Hanna’s twists on the classics, like an ultimate crab pizza or buffalo chicken dip. Another delicious seafood venue is Ropewalk Oyster House. As the name suggests, they offer so many variety of oysters that by the end of the night, you will be a connoisseur. This popular spot is already taking Valentine’s Day reservations.

But if you are looking to spice your night up, Matteo’s Salsa Loco is it! Award winning margaritas, live music and authentic Mexican food inspired by regional seafood. Muy Deliciosa!!!

Uncommon Gift Giving…

We are so often scared about getting the wrong gift. Because of this fear, Valentine’s Day gifts become same old same old… candy, flowers, stuffed animals, etcetera, etcetera… Try something a little different this year. Blown glass is beautiful and precious, as diverse as it is delicate. At Jeffrey Auxer Designs you can find pieces as one-of-a-kind as your love. You can also participate in classes where you’ll make an original art piece.

Parking in Delaware Beaches

Don't let parking be a nightmare! Prepare for your Delaware Beaches vacation.

Don’t let parking be a nightmare! Prepare for your Delaware Beaches vacation.

People come to the Delaware Beaches because these quiet, family friendly, ocean front towns are free from the frantic hustle that swarm the more popular locations. But because this is a residential community, what comes along with that small, beach town feel are parking nightmares. Some of the biggest complaints from visitors to these shores is that parking was next to impossible.

But forewarned is forearmed as they say. If you come prepared, then your beach vacation doesn’t have to be full of the stress of searching for a parking spot.

Here are some helpful hints about preparing to park in Delaware Beaches:

Off-Season Parking

If you are planning to come during the off-season, usually from Labor Day — Memorial Day, parking is free except where prohibited. So maybe you should plan a non-summer visit to the Delaware Beaches.

Parking Permits

Parking Permits can be attained while in town or ahead of time. These can be used if you are planning to stay a day, a weekend or if you are planning to keep coming back all season. Parking Permits allow you to park like a local, but they can be a bit pricey.

Metered Parking

The meters in Delaware Beaches only take quarters (unless it is also a Parkmobile location, see below). So it’s a good idea to keep a roll of quarters in your car at all times. At most locations, credit cards are no longer accepted!

Be sure to pay attention to the signs! Some parking is limited to 2 to 3-hours. And there are zones where parking is not permitted, or where parking is just residential or business.

Parkmobile

If you have a smartphone, Parkmobile may be the option for you. Pay for metered parking with the click of a button. You don’t even have to run back to your car to add more time to the meter. Parkmobile is available at Bethany Beach, Dewey Beach, Lewes and Rehoboth.

Watch this video for more info:

Parking is Enforced

If you do not follow the parking rules, expect to have a ticket waiting for you. Your car could even get booted or towed.

Parking Fills Up FAST

If you want a spot, metered or otherwise, try to get to the beach by 10 a.m. By 10:30, the spots may all be gone.

Take Advantage of Public Transportation

Bethany Beach Trolley Services:
After you park in Bethany Beach, take advantage of the 25-cent trolley. It makes stops all over Bethany, and you can’t beat the price.

 The Jolly Trolley:
Catch a ride to see the best of Rehoboth and Dewey beaches! An inexpensive lift that makes a number of convenient stops as well as providing fun facts along the way.

DART Resort Transit System
Avoid the hassle of parking all together by using the DART. You can park your car all day, then ride the easy-to-use transit system to travel all over the Delaware Beaches.
