During the spring and early summer, Horseshoe crabs can be found along the Delaware coast. These living fossils have evolved very little over the last 450 million years, making them one of the oldest creatures on the planet.
Dewey Beach – Lewes According to legend, the famous pirate Captain Kidd buried a chest of gold in the sand dunes on Cape Henlopen in the 1700s. Lewes claims to be “the first town in the first state” because Dutch settlers founded the first European settlement in Delaware here in 1631.

Fenwick Island The 87-foot-tall Fenwick Island Lighthouse only cost $5 to paint in 1880. Fenwick Island’s name may seem like a misnomer, but when it was established in the early 18th century, inlets and marshes which were often underwater made Fenwick an actual island.
