Outdoor Activities Abound at Fenwick Island State Park

When you think about spending the day outdoors in Fenwick Island, your mind immediately goes to the sandy beaches along the Atlantic Ocean. Along with the beach, there are several other ways to have some fun in the great outdoors. Among the many things to do in Fenwick Island, a must-do is spending a day at Fenwick Island State Park.

About Fenwick Island State Park

Situated between the Atlantic Ocean and Little Assawoman Bay, Fenwick Island State Park is a 344-acre state park. During World War II, the park was used as part of Delaware’s coastal defense system. You can still see one of the observation towers used at the northern end of the park.

Things to Do at Fenwick Island State Park

This three-mile stretch of barrier island is perfect for a number of outdoor activities.

Hiking and Horseback Riding

While there aren’t any wooded hiking trails at Fenwick Island State Park, the park’s beach area is a great place for a leisurely hike. With an everchanging marine environment, there’s so much to see as you stroll down the shoreline. The 2.6 miles of beach are available year-round for hiking, and from November 1–April 30 for horseback riding.

Fishing

The waters of Fenwick Island State Park are great for surf fishing. The park has three dune crossings that give anglers access to the multi-use beaches. A current fishing license from the DNREC’s Division of Fish and Wildlife is required to fish at Fenwick Island State Park. You can also drive right onto the beach if you have a surf fishing license plate.

Water Sports

In addition to fishing, Fenwick Island State Park is also perfect for boating, kayaking, surfing and swimming. The swimming is patrolled by lifeguards from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. Boat, kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals are available from nearby Coastal Kayak during the summer season. The park has on-site umbrella and beach chair rentals, as well as food and refreshments available for purchase.
